Get involved in poetry groups. Usually poets flock together and publish together. That's why the Beat poets of the 50s were published. That's why the 19th Century New England poets including Robert Frost, Henry Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Longfellow, and others flocked together.

Like alot of people said just go with what you are feeling. Alot of what I write comes from what I see everyday on the news, in the papers, or on the radio. Don't worry if you don't get an entire poem right off the bat. Just write what you have at that moment and the rest will come. I've walked away from a poem before just to take a step back from "trying too hard". Also I NEVER ask anyone what they think until I am finished with a poem because the first and foremost person who has to be happy with the poem is you. I know what we all learned in school...poetry is this this and this. Like it was said before poetry is one of the most free forms of expression. Just say what you feel and it will all come to you. If you would like any further assistance please..feel free to e-mail me. I'll even be glad to show you an example of how I write.

I’m not much of a poetry writer, but I write just to amuse myself and horrify the missus. But if you want real ideas I suggest checking on the sites below would benefit you. Of course there are many other sites but these are the few that captured my interest. Happy writing.

At first, write down whatever comes into your head.

I have bits of paper all over the house with various lines on them. I then end up putting lines from 2 years ago with something I just wrote.

Never ask family for their opinions on your poems. They will either be too polite to give critisim where it is due, or will say something really horrid!

the best tip i got when i started, was Write what you feel.
Base your poetry on what you feel in your heart and head. Base it on what you know about.
Good luck!!

Just write whatever is on your mind- your poetry can narrate a story, or express your emotions.

Just put down the first word that comes to mind. It may not seem right but after you get down what you feel and all, you can make changes!
