It's natural, it emerges once one is in puberty.

Kind thoughts,

I think it's pretty much the medical-scientific consensus now that sexuality doesn't just "appear" at adolescence, but emerges and develops at that time. That goes for "straight" and "gay" people. I do feel that I was born gay, that I had an awareness of myself as "different" long before I was ever conscious of my sexuality. In fact, I can remember finding my dad's girlie mags when I was 7 or 8 and knowing that they represented "sex," and therefore associating naked girls with "sex"; but by the time I actually started to go through puberty and figured out for myself what "sex" really was, I knew I was attracted to boys.

As for whether it's "natural," of course it is. People who say otherwise simply don't know what they're talking about. If it's not natural, what is it - artificial? Do YOU think you're faking it? Being gay is "natural" to people who are gay. It's really as simple as that.

The anti-gay types like to insist that being gay is the result of some traumatic childhood event, or having a weak father and a domineering mother, or that it's simply a case of bad decision-making on the part of the "gay." The reason they insist on this is because then they can continue thinking that being gay is some kind of disorder or perversion. But all the legitimate, responsible, non-agenda-driven research suggests that this is not the case.

Of course, the REAL point here is that it shouldn't matter whether it's a "choice" at all. If two grown adults decide they want to have sex with each other, how in hell is that anybody else's business? They aren't hurting anybody. Objections of "religion" and "tradition" are irrelevant in a secular democracy such as we enjoy. If people think that gay sex is "wrong," they're under no compulsion to engage in it, but nor should they be able to dictate whether other people do.

Few people have sexual feelings for others before the age of puberty. As we enter into puberty, our sexual desires begin to be felt. So, in my opinion, we are born this way or at least with a tendency towards being gay. Most of the gays that I know say they knew by the age of 12 even if they didn't accept it or tried to make themselves heterosexual.

It's natural for some folks and not for others. Being heterosexual us unnatural for me. Perhaps for you, too. It's only those who harbor prejudices that can make life harder, but even those are evaporating (slowly).

EDIT: After reviewing the article referenced by Mark H above me, the conclusions drawn by Dr. Collins are not based on science, but clearly just conjecture. What is more, he is equating sexual attraction with a personality trait such as "agreeableness" and "traditionalism." Sexual orientation falls far more at the core than do such genetic components. Dr. Collins is a geneticist, and while I respect his work on the genome project, he is not talking about something that is entirely his field.

There is evidence that PART of homosexual orientation is genetic. There is additional evidence that PART of homosexual orientation is formed in utero. What is not disputed by any reputable scientist who is looking at the entire data set is that all sexual orientation is set before puberty, i.e., before the age of responsible choice making.

Would you hold a 7-year-old responsible for the rest of his life if he/she found themselves left-handed? Would you force them to be right-handed when their anxiety went crazy?

Christianity and Islam (and some Jews) are so obsessed with "righteous" sexuality, it prevents our entire society from relaxing regarding it. Thank goodness Europe has begun to heave a sigh of relief regarding such restrictiveness.

What is NATURAL is what is natural to you. If you are harming no one else, are engaging in activities that are mutually agreeable to you and your partner, and behave in a responsible and non-contagious manner, then you are behaving in both a natural and ethical way. Mark H fortunately has no sway over you or me.

I believe we are born the way we are either strait or gay . You just have to follow your heart and not judge yourself harshly. If you feel for someone of the same sex. I believe its the way we are. Just be yourself don't do what feels wrong even if that is what you are told is right. Only you know whats in your heart Good Luck!!!

most people don't really have a sexuality until they hit puberty. The norm of society is hetrosexual so people assume you have to 'disover' homosexuality but the reality is everyone spends a time discovering their sexuality.
Our sexual prefernce isn't something we simply choose and I think it's something that is dormant in us all since birth reguardless of orientation.
