We are getting a new (to us) dog.
Male Yorkie- quite "hyper" I'm told.
I'm thinking Sparky. Since its a new home, new owners and all.
What do you think?

WOW!
Thanks everyone.
I actually read these answers out loud and when I said "Ziggy" out loud and my son and the new dog- looked at me and My son kept screaming Ziggy and the dog kept his ears up, he liked it.
SO it looks like its "Ziggy"! Yorkie boy picked it over Sparky....go fig. The dog picked his own new name! Bravo!
Thanks everyone! Your all winners.

If it already has a name it's best to keep it thay way, because that often confuses the dog and it wont respond.
However, if it didnt or you just really want to change it, i would suggest spot or Ziggy, or Zeek, or springer/y/s, or jet.
Good Luck!

Congrats on your new Yorkie. They're the greatest. Name him what you like, doggies don't know any different, they react to tone of voice not words. Give Sparky a little more time, he'll settle down.

If the dog responds to its old name, i htik you should keep the old name instead of making the yorkie all confused.
but Sparky is a great name!!
:)
good luck with your dog

They say a dog cannot understand its name when being called, I disagree. I have a 7 year old pekingnese and a year old pomeranian and they know their names, So if the dog will respond to its name now it might be hard to get it used to a new name.

Like the name Sparky...
But if "Sparky" had a name before I wouldn't rename the dog.
It will get the dog confused

A dog can get used to a new name at any age...it won't hurt his feelings or anything. Just be really consistent using it (don't EVER use the old one!), and associate it with the reward of affection or a treat when he answers to it.

I wouldn't, unless it had a *really* stupid name to start with. But if you want to, go ahead; with a little time and effort, it is possible to teach the dog a new name.

All my adopted animals were given new names. They get used to their new name along with their new family and their new home.

if you give the dog new name he might not listen to you if he's called with the new name, since he might be use to his old name. maybe you should try calling him by his new name and see if he response, if he does then change it otherwise don't.

Like the dog really cares. Just don't call him late for dinner.
