regular bleach is chlorine. color safe bleach is hydrogen peroxide, usually. neither one has the "sufactant" power of detergent that separates the dirt from your clothing, but they both have the power to kill bacteria and eliminate or reduce color. color safe bleach will only attack color which is produced by organic matter of some sort, eg: blood, grass, berries, etc. it won't touch set stain or dye color. chlorine bleach will.

Yes, while bleach whitens things, it doesn't work properly without detergent. So if you have dingy, grey looking socks, undies, etc, that used to be white but aren't, bleach and detergent is what you need. To do a load of colors, just detergent is your best bet.

****NOTE**** No one has warned yet, nor would you typically run into this while doing laundry, but do not mix bleach and ammonia (the main ingredient in most window cleaners). The fumes from these two together are toxic.

Bleach is for whites that can handle it. Delicates cannot. I only use bleach for my husbands underwear or those items that the tag tells me I can. Bleach takes out any and all stains and whitens. Color safe bleach can handle all your colors and just gives an extra boost to your wash without losing any color. It's not rocket scientist stuff.

Bleaches are oxidizing agents, that is they are chemicals that react with molecules and break them apart. Detergents are emulsifiers, that is they combine with fats, oils and dirt and break them into very small particles that dissolve in water. Color safe bleaches are still oxidizers, they just aren't as strong as chlorine bleach.
