Roughly about 60 miles.
Either take 880, South, then over the Santa Cruz mountains and take Highway 1, South, all the way to Montery.
Alternate, take 101 South and then 156, West. It will connect you to Highway 1, South.

I used to live in San Jose, and Monterey was and is my favorite place to visit. From the airport, it will take you about 90 minutes to get to Monterey, and like one of the other writers, I strongly recommend going down 101 and then taking route 156 west to highway 1. If you go any other route, it will take you longer, and you will waste a lot of gas trying to get over the mountains ( Monterey is on the west side of the Santa Cruz range) and you may also get stuck behind a lot of slow traffic. The route I mentioned will take you through the hills that are south of San Jose, and will also take you through Gilroy and past Watsonville ( where they grow all the strawberries which everyone in other parts of the country eat) and Castroville, which is the artichoke capital of the US. The total distance from South San Jose, where I used to live, is about 70 miles- from the airport, it's closer to 80. One other note: The entrance from 156 onto 101 is metered- meaning that it has lights. I think that there are lights coming out of the airport onto 101 as well. A word to the wise- plan for them. Hope this helps.

It's actually closer to 80 miles from SJC to the tip of the peninsula, 75 miles to downtown Monterey. I highly recommend traveling on US-101, and going west on CA-156 to Highway 1. It is much faster, and a freeway most of the way. If you go on US-17, the mountains are difficult to maneuver, going about 50 MPH max, and waste gas. Also, on the Moss Landing of Highway 1, it is not a freeway, but a cross traffic road. So daylight headlights are required, and the speed limit is low. I had no idea and went that way the first time I went to Monterey from Sunnyvale, and I followed behind a slow truck the whole way, with no way to pass. But the view is better, so if you have 2 hours, I would go that way. But otherwise, US-101 gets there in about 1 and a half hour. Hope that helps!!!

Around 75 minutes if traffic is light. I prefer going over 17 and then south on 1. It's a more scenic drive and more interesting places to stop along the way if you are so inclined.
