Yes it can work, but you need to do three things.

1) Disable the DHCP server on the wireless router.
2) Change the IP address of the wireless router, as most routers have the same IP address by default and the two canot work using the same IP address.
3) Do not use the WAN (Internet) port when connecting from your step fathers router to the wireless router. Connect straight to one of the available ethernet ports.

This would be alot simpler if you just replaced the wired router with the wireless router........

Let's make sure I understand what you have and wish to do.

1. The modem and wired router is at computer # 1.
2. The router has built in wired LAN ports or you have a network switch connected to the router.
3. There is a wired CAT5 line, using ethernet protocol, linking the LAN ports (at router or at switch) to computer # 2 and another similar CAT5 linking to computer # 3, your pc.
4. You want to have a wireless capability at your location and want to have wireless plugged in at your location.

If this is what you want to do, I suggest you purchase a Wireless Access Point, plug it into the CAT5 cable where your pc is, and you will have wireless broadcast at your location. You will need wireless network card for your pc at this point unless it already has one.

You can also use a wireless router rather than wireless acces point but if you do be sure to turn off DHCP at this router or you will have subnet problems.

It depends on your PC. Ig your computers both have the wireless devices to access wirelessly, then you can get one at Circuit City or Best Buy. Otherwise, you will need to buy the Wireless N PC card and plug it into the rear of your computer. To set up:

Use the Ethernet Cable to connect your modem to your Wireless N router. You will need 1 more Ethernet cable modem to connect the Wireless N router to your PC---> to set up the Wireless N router (WEP/WPA key).

Good Luck

i'm assuming which you have an ethernet cord between the modem and the router's WAN port, then a 2nd cord between the router LAN port and the laptop. At that factor the two the double under pressure out LAN icon and the only prompt icon ought to the two instruct connections. specific? Hover the mouse over the prompt icon. you ought to work out that it shows fifty 4 mbps and acceptable or very good sign and related assuming additionally which you by no skill gave the router a clean call and that's unsecured. specific? once you disconnect the ethernet cord does the prompt icon replace? If not all ought to artwork. regardless of the undeniable fact that, if without warning it shows that "constrained" message i think of you're disconnecting the incorrect cord. you ought to disconnect the only between the laptop and the router, not the different one.

NO! 2 routers will cause many problems. You need a wireless access point.

You would have better luck replacing the current "wired" router with the wireless one.
