A car has to be insured by the registered owner, as that is the person the insurer would have to pay out in the event of a loss. I appreciate that your friend has no claims bonus and you don't, but the only way you will ever start to build up a no claims bonus of your own is to get some insurance in your own name. If you were to insure it in a friends name, you would be no better off as when you do come to insure it yourself, you would still have no no claims bonus. I know that insurance is expensive for drivers under 25, but that is because to the insurer, you have nothing to show that you are a safe driver. No no claims discount, not much driving experience etc, but once you have got the first year's insurance out of the way, it will start to come down in price if you don't make claims and get some driving experience behind you, so it is worth doing. Just think that in five years time, if you are claim free, you will have full no claims bonus like your friend and other people with no no claims discount will be envious of you. Have you considered taking the Pass Plus certificate? It is an extended driving test where you have to drive in rain and on the motorway, and if you pass, you get a years no claim discount before you even start your insurance. Every year it will be cheaper to insure as every year you will have that extra year discount. It is also worth shopping round on a price comparison web site to get a better deal. Good luck.
