You mother will be able to draw off of her husbands social security even if she never worked a day in her life. If he dies, her benefits will increase. If she had a previous husband who made higher wages, she might be able to get more depending upon the several variables.

It's unreal how many of these folks have no clue about social security and how it works. It has nothing to do with how much you put into it. It's a pay as you go system folks. Besides her husband's survivor benefits, assuming she had a husband and if she was a housewife I imagine she did, she'll have a benefit of her own. She's also eligible for medicare. There should be a senior center or something in your home town that can answer many of your questions. Or just go to the social security administration web site, don't know the URL, and see what you can find. If she's rapidly approaching sixty five, you need to get on it quickly. Good luck and my best to your mom.

Karma - if she did such a great job of raising her kids as you suggest, shouldn't they take care of her? My sisters and I spoil our parents with trips, autos, home makeover, landscaping etc. Our parents gave us lots of love and guidance on little income and instead of asking what should other people do to help them, we do it ourselves. It's called respect.
