they eat decaying "food" plus
they carry bacteria that helps rotten stuff rot more.
rotten mush is good for the soil and gives plant nutrients to grow with

and they feed other living creatures on the food chain, like spiders

This may sound gross, but, I've read somewhere....

When they are maggots, and you've been in a bad accident with an open wound, maggots can really help you because they will eat the infection in your wound to help you keep alive until help will arrive.

Well before they are flies they are maggots and maggots are sometimes put on infections to eat dead skin and bacteria.
