I only ask because I'm doing these surveys right now for my job and so many people are uneducated or even miseducated. Some people don't know what greenhouse gases are (do they live under a rock) or they have some construed idea that when something is recycled it never actually gets used in factors, but that's a vicous scheme by the government. Do you think there should be some sort of test, or mandatory reading (short though) before you can enter a polling booth? Seriously, everyone is allowed to vote and they are sometimes swaying important decisions that could effect everyone, not just themselves. Should there be some sort of weeding out process for all those that should really just stay under their rocks?

Well I'm not talking about giving IQ tests, which is what they did for blacks who were just freed. Obviously that was corrupt. I'm just saying to have a short reading before hand of both sides of an issue. Maybe have people watch a few questions of a debate before voting for the president, etc. (Since I think a lot of people just vote for their party).

First of all, many of those people who do the activities that you just mentioned do have to go through traning before they can just drive an 18 wheeler or cook in a restaurant. Way to go, lecturing me on more things to worry about while you're sitting there getting heated about the question. Can't you come up with a better way of expressing yourself than with ***??

Also, I understand its the law, but the whole point of my question was to get you to think for yourselves, not what the law is! I asked for opinions, not a reiteration that we live in America.

Yes and no. By doing something like this, you can help a nation make better democratic decisions. However, you are depriving certain citizens their right to vote. The law says that anyone over 18 years of age, whether they be educated or a total idiot, has the right to vote.

Absolutely not, all citizens should be allowed to vote, regardless of how "up" on the issues they are.
ETA: I think often, folks who don't bother learning anything about the issues or candidates in an election are unlikely to show up at the polls anyway. Yes, there are party-line-voters, more than there should be, but everyone's criteria for voting for someone is different - some read up, some watch the debates, some just want a conservative or a liberal - I maintain that everyone should have the right to exercise that vote whether or not they are capable or reading or understanding things like global warming or education funding. I doubt there are many people who are educated about all the issues anyway - I would bet that a mom who is clueless about greenhouse gases is likely to be up on her local school board, or where a candidate stands on immigration - everyone's under a rock on some topic.

There's a lot to consider, I understand what you mean about giving a brief rundown of each party and such, but look at it this way, usually the more educated people are higher in class and when they vote for someone they feel is best for them, it ends up effecting the majority in the lower class and vice versa. So it isn't really fair to have them take a test to vote and the debates are public for everyone to see, if they aren't going to watch it on TV, do you really think some people are going to read about it?

Forgive me, I plan to make minsemeat out of your sensible sounding question.
Education is over-rated, especially when you remove the wisdom of God from our schools.
Liberal-leaning atheistic educators are indoctrinating our next generation anyway! Do you think we need more of this? Maybe you want teachers to be the only ones with a vote.
You must realize all of life is an education. THAT is the "meaning" of life. If you won't bother to learn the issues, you don't need to bother voting.
Besides, is there any big difference between the "liar iar" lawyers who run? God only knows if we should vote for Tweedledumb or Tweedledumber!
Last but not least, big business has our political parties in their pockets (donation wanted); AND our democratic government is "over ruled" anyway, by a small hand full of unimpeachable-for-life Supreme Court Judges.
They MAKE the law of the land, and have the only votes that matter!!!

umm...that takes away from the rights of American's....
Sounds like a dictatorship or comunism....
Welcome to American honey...welcome to america. I think there are more important things people have to be educated to do then vote...lol be parents, any coke addict can raise a child in American, nursing school is so easy to go through, any dumb *** now can go and give you shots in the hospital. They are cooking your food in resturants and temping your food before serving it. Do you want a dummie making sure your beef is cooked before you eat it or are you worrried who tehy will vote for? Any dumb *** can drive an 18-wheeler on the highway going 80mph next to you on the highway...voting might be the least of the problem that un-educated people do.
Think about it...people who are un-educated don't really vote...prob. just a small amount of the population at a whole, they prob. don't sway your votes. Way more important things to worry about in this world

No way. Life is an education. All adults over 18 should have the right to vote. Placing conditions on that right is dangerous. Because once that is done it wont stop with education. Next, it'll be do you have to have a certain income level to vote, a certain heritage, etc....dangerous thinking.

No! They did this back in the early part of the 20th century, in an effort to prevent many blacks from voting; this was because, at the time, the level of education for blacks was very poor in general, given segregation, and lack of opportunity. It's a mistake I hope we never go back to again.

I couldn't agree more. Also people should pass a test to have children. If you can't afford them, & don't have the education to raise them to be responsible, compassionate people, you shouldn't have them.
