It is human nature under the approximate age of seven.
After that they should have learned manners and civility from their parents unless they didn't have any to teach, in which case they will spend a lot of energy throwing liquids up against the wind, if you know what I mean.

I am not a "Believer" but I'm not necessarily and atheist either. Somewhere in the middle.
What I don't like about religion is that I thought it teaches tolerance, and the "Believers" are the least tolerant people out there. (Okay, not all are). They try to push their beliefs on other people, and that drives me crazy.
I'm not out there saying "your God doesn't exist!" and trying to force them to not believe.
anyway, the reason a lot of them wouldn't do it face-to-face is because the Internet offers anonymity. People get a lot bolder when they don't have to say something to someone's face.
I debate with my "Believer" friends all the time. I think it pisses her off, but I like to do it because I gain a little bit more understanding.

Honestly, I find I have to stay away from Religion & Spirituality - those people spook me. As one of your other answerers pointed out, people love to argue. The problem with religeous arguments, though, is that none of the usual rules of debate apply. You can't lay out a logical argument based on fact in an area where there are no facts. Religion is about faith, and by its very nature, faith demands belief without proof. The closest most people can come to fact based argument in religious debate is to quote sacred texts, be they the Bible or the Quran or what have you, but again: without belief in their sacred nature, these are not facts, but still opinions. I think that's why religeous debate so often devolves into name calling, especially in a forum like YA, where anonimity makes everyone brave.

Ha, im Atheist/Agnostic and I have fights with my Christian friends all the time. People like to argue, however you also have to understand that believers aren't comfortable about somethings. Many Christians tell me I'm going to hell because I don't believe in the existence of god. However, my beliefs in no way target people and discredit their beliefs. Its almost like being neutral, however Christian and Catholics, among other religions have to fight over why they are right. Thats the cause of many wars, (religious belief) and in the end does any of it really matter?
By the way ill go face to face with anyone about it.
