Hi:
First off the bat: I put two coat of white acrylic paint, drying each coat over night before add the next coat . After the last coat of white is dry. You can use any color paint; you want to use to paint your paper mache project - in any pattern you want to use- Just make sure the surface is completely dry before add any new paint.
This is from Painting a couple dozen Paper Mache projects myself
Here are some books and website for it along with my favorite Paper Mache paste recipe for it:

Well first. You breathe. Second, do you not have any glue to make paper mache? Because you can always use flour and water. If you find that the paper is horribly stuck on there, see if you can peel it off, if not then cut off the pieces that stick out in weird places. Cut up the paper in thickish strips. Not huge, but think. maybe an 1in-1 1/2 inches. Just keep working until around 11:00. That gives you like 7 hours of sleep still. Work quickly, and efficiently. Don't fumble. Don't freak. Just keep going. FINALLY. Give your friend a good old fashioned punch in the face [:

Is the poster paint acrylic? As stated earlier, do not use watercolors or even tempra paints as both are susceptible to water even after drying. I would suggest acrylics as well, the paint dries rather quickly and is not water-soluble once it is dry.
I would suggest that you spray the paper mache piece with a lacquer-based primer before applying paint. This will help to prepare the surface for paint, it will also help to seal the porous surface so the paper does not lose form as easily when the wet paint is applied. Rustoleum, Krylon, Xynolyte are some inexpensive cans of primer that can be found in stores.
Allow the primer to dry -about 24 hours- before painting.
To protect your work you may also wish to spray a clear-coat over the painted paper mache -once it is dry. Clear coats come in aerosol cans and are usually in glossy, satin, and matte forms.
hope that helps.

This Site Might Help You.
RE:
What paint is best to use for a paper mache project?
Does poster paint cut it? Or do I need to use the paint that they use on walls and ceilings? I'm a newbie at crafting but would like to know what to do before I start, I get discouraged by failing at experiments.... Thanks.

The main things to think about are whether a particular paint is permanent (water-proof) or not, and how expensive it is for the amount you need.
"Poster paint" is usually tempera, I believe, so it's not waterproof after drying (you could add a layer of clear sealer on top to make it waterproof though). Same for "watercolors" and some others.
Acrylic paints (craft paints in bottles, artists' acrylics in tubes) are great, and permanent, but if you want to go cheaper, buy latex or any type of house/wall paint since they'll all be permanent once dry and come in larger amounts for the money.
You can buy these by the can for brushing or sponging on, or in cans for spraying.
Notice whether any particular paint gives a "glossy" surface by itself, or "satin" or "matte"--also called "flat."
You won't need to seal most house and wall paints, but you can add a finish if you want to give a shiny finish to a paint that's not shiny, for example.
The advice about using a "primer" paint is good too in order to make it more opaque and require fewer coats of color... or you can just apply more coats of color.
P.S. Don't use artists' "oil" paints on a porous surface like papier mache though... it would stay sticky a long time and also wouldn't be really opaque.

If you first coat the project with a couple thin layers of artist's gesso, you can paint with anything on top of that, including water colors. Acrylics will be permanent, and waterproof (not that you should intentionally get the finished project wet). After painting, it's advisable to apply a layer of sealer of some type, acrylic varnish, or other type of sealer. Good luck!

Tempera or Poster paint. Make sure the paper mache is COMPLETELY dry before you paint. Use the paint sparingly and thin coats. If you have to, do another coat after the first one has dried.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/WoodworkingProjects
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
