I am looking at a 540i with 80k miles on it and was wondering if anyone has had personal knowledge or experience on cars of that build and year. I test drove it and it felt fine: the tranny was smooth, brakes felt good, engine was very potent (4.4L 280hp!), and the body felt stiff and healthy. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

That's a nice car. Get it with Sports Package if possible... those look the best.

The only thing I would watch for is the tranny, Bavarian Autosport did a transmission fluid change on their 2001 540i with 80,000 miles on it and what came out was filthy (despite BMW's claims on the fluid lasting a "lifetime").

You should change the fluid out asap once you get the car. Call the guys at Bavarian if you need advice. They're all very friendly and helpful.

Well I had a 325 series BMW, it had 125,000 miles on it when I bought it... and some 320,000+ miles later, all I ever did was, kept the oil changed & then finally I needed brakes. Yes the parts were expensive but the mileage I got out of that vehical was more than exceptional for what I put into it! And if I could find one that is wheelchair accessible for my lil girl, I would definately invest in another. Good luck.

this is a great car , it does have some areas that are a concern , powersteering leaks , coolant leaks , parts aren't cheap , but the drive is MORE than worth the cost , keep the oil and water away from each other an 250 - 300 K should not be a problem , enjoy the ride

take it to a shop to get it check out, most shops will do a 24 point plus inspection for as little as 1/2 an hour of labor. you might also consider having the computer system checked out, that will tell you if there are any sensors going bad. once again most shops will charge 1/2 an hour of labor.

this is the only way to tell how this car is doing

Well, my dad owns a BMW and it doesn't take long for something to brake. He's had it for less than 10 years and has spent over $10,000 on it. I also have a bunch of friends who own one and they're always complaining about BMW. I would rather keep looking at other cars. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I second the concern on the transmission. Brother had one..$5000 to replace the failure. No warranty!
