Are you happy now that you have grown up?

Question

When you were younger and were asked what do you want to be when you grow up, what did you say? Did you follow your child dream/ambition? If so, are you happy now?

Of did you do something completely different?

Of are directionless, had not real dream, like a free spirit - trying anything and everything?

Ahwell - No sorry, I am not a Yorkshire lass and definately didn't hear the radio show! A London girl and proud! I had this conversation with a colleague this week who is soon to be an ex work colleague; she is leaving to pursue her dream of training to be a Vet, so she was the inspiration behind the question

I wanted to be a mermaid!!

I left school with enough qualifications to be a Paramedic, but I got pregnant during college as I was wasting a year till I passed my driving test and planned to work for a while as you have to be driving for 3years before you can apply. But, baby was more important to me and everything went t!ts up from there!! I ended up in a violent marriage, my mum hated me, and I was not happy!!

But I'm now happy in a great job and I have all I want, but not quite what I imagined my life to be.... All the childhood fantasies of living in a big house, married to a hardworking wealthy bloke with loads of kids and great cars and holidays!

But it's all material, I have everything, just not as good as I hoped. But I'm still a happy bunny!

I wanted to join the army to drive lorries. They told me girls couldn't drive because it could involve active duties and that wasn't allowed since women weren't allowed to carry arms in the 70's in the Belgian army. Same with the air force and the navy but for other reasons.
Then i wanted to be a long-distance lorry driver or diesel mechanic. But my parents said that was no job for a girl so that was the last of that dream for a few years.
Then eventually i ended up in London. Got my car licence and proudly went for a job with London Buses where an instructor put me in a car to have my driving skills assessed. He told me i had the nerve but not the experience and to come back after i had some driving experience.
I never did. Instead i got a motorbike licence and became a motorcylcle courier.
Wouldn't want to drive lorries now. Way too much traffic on the road. I thoroughly enjoyed my years as a motorcycle courier, did some stints driving vans.
Still haven't grown up though ... don't think i ever will ... there is always something new to learn or dream of :-)

I knew so little about the world when I was young that I didnt know what options were available, so I let my mother push me into an office job I hated where I was working with people who were all 40 years older than me, so I was very lonely at work. When I got older I was too afraid to try new things in case I failed. So that's the last 30 years wasted. It led to a nervous breakdown in the end which in turn led my employer giving me the sack and now I am on benefits. I suppose I'm just weak.

when I was young I wanted to be a doctor but was put off by how long it took to train (got bored quickly, still do !!!!), in my teens I developed a driving ambition to be a rich career woman in the city .....
I worked in banking for 15 years & was fairly sucessful (ie lots better than average wage but nowhere close to super sucessful by city standards) then got fed up with being crap at business politics & so many a**holes but I did meet my husband & now have the opportunity to do something different which is pending - secretly though I wish I'd stuck out the training to be a Dr but it's a bit late now & I am a great believer in learn from the past but don't look back too much .... ask this question again in a year !!!!!!!!!!

I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I only knew I wanted to be there. Now I'm here, I try hundreds of different things. As each one is experienced, I grow a bit, and learn a bit more. However, everyone has a different life plan, and some will stick to the one thing. There is no right or wrong path; just different ways.

Gimme a break! I'm only 70. I've got ages to go yet before I start looking backwards. lol
Yes, I've achieved some stuff - not what I'd expected when I was younger though.
I was crazy when I was a kid. I've achieved a little bit of sanity - I think - enough to be reasonably happy, anyway.
Free Spirit? Well now, freedom is funny stuff, y'know? Freedom implies discipline - yes, it does.
My discipline's not bad. One day I will achieve freedom.

I always say to my friends about growing up- I'm not doing that.
I am going to be like Peter Pan, but with a shadow attached.
If when you grow older you think old then you will be old; if however you think young then you will stay young.
I've been privileged to have been in education for over 35 years.
Children kept me young.They made me laugh. They also stretched me intellectually.
I've retired now and I'm able to spend my time doing what I've not had the time to do previously.
When I was small I always wanted to be famous, don't we all.
Now I am bigger, I'm happy being me and doing what I like doing.

Mellow right now--but impatient,impulsive, kind to those who have suffered--and critical. You can't be happy unless you've been sad first! -- the doldrums? or the roaring forties? Being with a woman can mean desperation-- alone is a vast lonely desolate future-- I'd rather be desperate.

I never had a dream until marriage. It was girls,girls,exploring.

Then we did something different -- and learnt -- if you don't go,you'll never know, Never look back and say,"I could have,but--"

im 17 and next year i hope to join the police i have wanted to do that for about 2 years

when i was little i didnt relise how much work it would be to be a vet i when i was young i thought you finished school and got a job in your dream job but oviously thats not true
my dreams changed because in reality im was never smart enough pass the exams and go to college and then uni.
i like the idea of moving from job to job to see what suits me but you know lifes a b**** hehe shh

Well, i wanted to study law and im an atorney's PA, I don't know if I still want to study law. Im busy Journalism and I was convinced that is what i wanted to but ive changed my mind. Now i want to study English Literature and become a teacher and novelist. But my dad owns a pub and grill, nightclub and internet cafe with beer garden all in one, and I have fun there. Im only 19 and I have big dreams.
