The way a tampon works is that while inside the vagina it soaks up the blood of the menstrual period. One thing good about them is that if you are a swimmer you'll be able to go ahead and go swimming.

If not inserted just right one can be very uncomfortable when it comes to pain and what I often had to do was take one finger and place it in my vagina and then slide the tampon over that other finger.

You need to change the tampon about every 3 hours. If you wait longer then it will stain your panties and create a huge mess.

I no longer use tampons due to medical reasons unrelated to the tampon and find that I prefer pads instead.

The brand I used when I used tampons is Ob. The thing I liked about them is that I didn't have to worry about an applicator the way I would have with other brands such as Tampax.

You open the wrapper, take out the tampon (if it's your first time grab a mirror so you can see what you're doing down there, and the instructions in the box of tampons and read over that too.) Hold it by the "ribbed/plunger/finger spot" and kind of spread your legs. My friend can't get the tampon in, if you have this problem you can use lube on your tampons to get them in. Insert the tampon into your vagina until the plunger thingy etc. reaches your skin. Then, push the stick or inner tube up so the tampon goes into you. Once the tampon is all the way in, pull the applicator out. There! You did it lol. If the tampon doesn't feel right though, take it out and try again. I suggest for first time users, Playtex slim fits they are tiny and you don't seem to feel them at all!

It wasn't in properly. There should be a diagram on or in the box to show you how to insert it correctly. I think some tell you to lie on the floor and try it until you get comfortable with it.
To make it easier, either get plastic applicators or cardboard with the rounded tip. (plastic's easier to start with) ANd get the kind with a plunger type applicator, not the kind you put in with just your fingers. There are rings where you hold it for insertion. Your fingers should basically be touching your body when you've inserted it. Then push in the plunger.
There should not be discomfort. If you feel it, it's probably not in far enough. You'll love them - they feel so much cleaner than pads. How often you change depends on how heavy you are. 4 to 6 hours is ok. And you can wear one to slepp in. Some people prefer to give their body a break, others won't think about not having them all the time. You'll still want to wear a panty liner. And only use the heaviest you need to. If you can use a slim instead of a regular or regular instead of super, do it.

you'll get the hang of it.

okay so i just got my first period like less than a year ago. ( i was 15 at the time; it got mine kinda late) but yea i used pads for the first few periods because i was so scared to try tampons. but it really wasnt that bad; and its no big deal once you use them a few times. and my suggestion would be to use the plastic onces because they are much easier to use. i like tampax pearl the best and use the regular ones at first. its pretty simpile to use; there is step by step directions in the box so that can guide you through it. just realax and stay calm. goodl luck.

and dont leave it in for longer than 4 to 6 hours or you could run the risk of getting TSS (toxic shock syndrome), it also talks about that inside the box.

so good luck and dont worry youll be fine.
