Hi Ian. As already stated...it's algae. Brown algae to be precise. This is usually caused by an excess of nitrates in the water and tends to be a sign of poor housekeeping. Have you checked you water quality? If not, please do so.
Generally, scraping it off, then vacuuming it out when cleaning the gravel bed while doing your weekly water changes will take care of this. Since it's coming back so strongly every week, I need to ask how much crap comes out when you vacuum? If you are getting a ton of crap when you vacuum, then you should do more frequent water changes (twice a week) until this clears up a bit then go back to once a week. If the algae doesn't have a food source, it won't grow and it's main food source is the nitrate. The best way to reduce the nitrate is to keep up with your tank maintenance.
Your description is actually humorous because although it is not fish crap itself, it is caused by fish crap.
Happy cleaning :-)

It's probably because there's a lot of light on the tank. I had the same problem where I was getting algae on everything in the tank and I turned the lights off unless I was home and it got a little better. What really helped me out was buying a plecko. You have a big enough tank that if you bought one you wouldn't even have to feed it and it will clean almost all of the algae for you. The only problem is that plecko's do get big and that could crowd your tank (they also poop a lot, but with semi-regular water changes/gravel cleanings it's no problem). They are really cool fish. I'm so glad I got mine and now I have no algae on the glass. He evens cleans my plants and my water heater of all algae. I really recommend them. Mine cost only $4.99 (a little expensive because I bought it in NYC) and was like 3 inches total length. It hasn't grown much because I don't feed him - I just let him eat the algae and he does a really good job of that.

You have algae, it's perfectly normal and natural. It can be caused by excessive levels of light and ammonia in the water. There are many ways to cut it down and make it almost unnoticable such as researching the amounts of light to use, monitoring ammonia and doing strict water changes, the addition of live plants to remove ammonia from the water, boosting your biological filter to aid the breakdown of ammonia, introducing certain algae eating fish (most of them grow very very large though, so be careful which you use), adding shrimp or my personal favourite adding some snails(rams horn or apple snails would be my advice), the population will shoot through the roof very quickly and they will eventually cut down algae till it's unnoticable. I'd recommend snails to be honest, they don't need any special care and don't negatively affect the look of the tank in my opinion. They can produce a good bit of waste though increasing the amount of water changes needed slightly, a cheap price to pay in my books.
Hope I helped
PS, please don't use chemicals to solve this, it's a short term solution and not good for your fishes health.

It's algae. That is a sign that you need to clean your tank more and feed your fish less. The algae grows when there are excess nutrients in the water.

That would be brown algae. Either get a pleco or algae eater, keep cleaning/changing your water, or get some chemicals to help get rid of it.

It's algea. Check with your fish store for products. You might want to also ask about your filtration system.
