yes, but manual is always better in 1/4 mile cause the rpms can go higher and you get more out of each gear, but acceleration is better on manual but you can still make an automatic fast

If you were looking to soup up a car with an automatic, you'd need to change a few parts.
If you're talking about like, only 25 or30 hp, that's no problem. The computer will be able to re-adjust the transmission programming enough to handle the extra power.
If you're adding more like, say, 100hp, you'd need to:
A- Swap out the torque convertor for one that is able to handle the power without over heating.
B- You'd need to either swap out or readjust the valves in the valve body. This will allow for firmer shifts and quicker shifts to counteract the extra power put on the clutch packs and eliminate any slipping.
C- You'll probably have to swap out the clutch packs themselves, given how many miles are on the transmission. It's always better to start off with new parts if you're going with big power then hoping the older, more worn parts will hold.

Also, you may want to think about a trans cooler, which will cool the trans oil and keep it from during into something with the consistancy of water.

Automatic transmissions can handle a lot of power when tuned properly. It's just that it is a bit harder because they are more complex then manuals.
But by all means, if you have the knowledge, or a friend who has the knowledge, it can be done, and it will beable to handle any power upgrads you have ready for it.

Automatic transmissions are less reliable if driven hard. You can do anything performance-wise the same as a manual car when it comes to parts and mods. the difference will just be how fast you can go (slower than a manual model) and the wear on the transmission.

Less reliability on the drive train. You will be putting more stress on the moving parts. When you upgrade the engine, remember that it is only part of a system and all of the other parts must be upgraded also.

Think of it as a chain. It is only as strong as the weakest link.
Good luck.

Automatic transmissions are less reliable if driven hard like that. Upgrade one part and you'll need to upgrade every other part.
