the flowers are usually longer.

You cut them so they fit the case properly without looking awkward.

Cut them at a 45 degree angle under running water and that will promote proper water absorption.

Soft stems seal over and woody stems get dried out. You want to crush any woody stems about an inch from the bottom and cut the soft stems so they will start to absorb the water in the vase and that will keep them nicer longer. When cutting rose stems, slice off all thorns (not cutting into the stem itself) and cut the stem at a diagonal while holding them under warm water. Immediately transfer them to the vase with water in it. This will keep them from wilting too fast. If the flowers come from a florist use the little packet that is enclosed with it. It helps nourish the flowers to make them stay fresh longer.

Because the ends of the stems have dried out from cutting and the veins in them cannot draw up enough water to keep the flower alive. Cut them on an angle to allow the most veins to be exposed and the most water to suck up. Do it under water so that the end never is exposed to air - which starts to dry the ends up immediately. Every two or three days, take the flowers out and cut them again to make them last longer. And remember to remove all the leaves below the water level - they will poison the water and kill the flowers. Pax - C

Cutting the stems of bought flowers extends their life. The flowers may have been cut for some time and the stems may have dried out a bit at base of stem. New cut allows them to take up water more easily. Hard stemmed flowers, e.g. roses, also benefit it you give the base of stem a bit of a bash and dip them in boiling water. Sounds cruel, I know, but look on it as first aid.
