I'm majoring in biology and want to work in conservation/wildlife/plant ecology. Would this course be beneficial? Is it an interesting course?

Its probably related, it depends on what kind of depth you want, I personally wouldnt do without it. It might help explain alot about the effects of pollution. I'm a chemist so of course I'd say its intersting, but that really depends.

Definitely. If you are interested in conservation/wildlife/plant ecology, I would think an understanding of the biochemical process that occur in wildlife and plants (for example, in response to a water pollutant) would be essential. Not the easiest of biology courses, but I think every biologist should have some basic understanding of biochemistry.

I'm a biochemist myself, did biochemistry as an undergraduate and am continuing in a PhD. Most of the course was really interesting, although some of the stuff in the first couple of years was rather dull, rote learning metabolic pathways and the like. Remember that not every university teaches biochemistry in quite the same way, even just on my course, what I learnt was very different to what other people learnt - optional units etc. Check the syllabus for the universities that catch your eye - every university has to declare what it intends to teach you - see for yourself what you'd be learning.

Can you major in biology and NOT take biochemistry? Biochemistry was a course requirement when I majored in biology (over 30 years ago).

To quote a leading biologist: "all biology is molecular biology". And molecular biology is biochemistry!

I would definately take it. You need to know the chemical make up of the plants and things and a little background for extra knowledge. You wouldn't necessarily have to take more than one year but 1 you really should consider. It can be very dull but let's just say not as dull as plain Chemistry... That's my opinion anyways... It all depends on your teacher too.

At my school it was required, but even if it isn't I would recommend taking it. I thought it was very interesting, and the lab was fun.

To really understand biology, you need to have a firm grasp on Chemistry.

Have Fun!!

if you like biology and chemistry you should take it.If you dont have any interest in it dont take it but it could be very helpful and good to have when appealing for a job and you will know alot more about plants and animals. It reallly up to you, but i will go for it!
