I have had an argument about this sometime. Beauty is not food, drink, sleep, shelter etc. but I feel there is more to life than just the bare essentials. How would it be to live without the breathtaking moments we experience time to time? (A question of what takes our breath away prompted this train of thought.) I hope you can answer this although I did not include any definition of beauty ; )

The bigger question for me: why would we ever want to? I think without those sublime moments life would really be pointless. We might as well be machines at that point. Life would be an Orwellian boring repitition. I think the suicide rate would go up, because getting out of that soulless mundane existence may be the only hope anyone would have left. Maslow's heirarchy of needs may say that yes without food, shelter, etc higher desires are a bit impractical, but without those higher desires having only your basic physical needs met is like existing in a prison.

We can live without beauty, but I don't believe it would be a life worth living. I wouldn't be satisfied with such a mundane experience. We all crave the moments that take our breath away, but even without them we would still trek along. Even if we don't have these moments we will survive on the hope that will see these moments one day.

considering your avatar, some people already do =3 haha, joking . . . Seriously though, beauty brings people happyness, and something to look forward to. Beauty also brings attraction from the other sexes. As animals have "pretty colors" we need something to attract the other mate. In a more modern sociaty(sp?), beauty also is used to manipulate people to get what one desires, i.e. jobs, money, happyness. So yeah, pretty much we need beauty.

This question s impossible to answer or ask. If you take everything away that seems to be beautiful to one person, you could be taking something away that is ugly from the other. In other words, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

we need attraction in order to mate it allows us to choose the perfect genetic match. primal instinct urges us to seek the most ascetically pleasing mate as we think this will ensure good genes. and if nothing else where would we be without it it is one of the last pure things. Having said that people are now trying to instill youth in themselves long after there "prime".

We could not. We could not live in a world with out appreciation of art, music, theater, dance, nature. It is neccesary to life. Every culture has some form of it. I believe is truly a human necessity.

it is possible: there are levels of existence the human need to survive is willing to accept. but I would not consider myself to be 'alive'!
it would be akin to a terrible slavery to be without beauty, you'd be form and appearance only you'd be cold and detached unable to love or cry everything would seem of exactly the same quality, without spirit, without humanity you 'd be a machine, just existing without purpose.

you cant provide a definition because beauty is subjective, no i wouldnt want to live without those moments. every morning when i wake up i roll over and watch my partner wake up... thats beautiful to me but maybe not someone else.
