Insurance companies take a lot of things into consideration. Body style, and hp/weight figure. So a car that has only a medium sized engine but is very light will have a high hp to weight ratio and will have higher insurance rates.

Convertibles, and 2 door cars are more likely considered sports cars. Call your insurance co. before you buy the car and get the rates for it. You may want to buy another model.

It isn't just engine size or horse power. A key point here is TWO DOORS. If a car has two doors its almost always classified as a sports car no matter what. Add to that a stick shift, and a turbo, and it will definitely be classed as a sports car.

not sure it has anything to do with the engine size. i had a 93 eagle talon with a stock 1.8 and it was considered a sports car. same with my stock 91 daytona with a 2.5. i think it has to do with the #of doors and body style
