Well, there are some philosophers that are "teleologists". They believe that there are circumstances that ineveitably lead to one result. Therefore, despite what we do, the ultimate end is the same. I think that's a little extreme, but that's one option.
Another option is that they are deceiving themselves because they don't want to take responsiblity for an issue either because of the way it reflects on them, or they are lazy, etc.

I think that there are many, many factors, all dependinmg on the sort of problem or situation, but narrowing down and generalizing....
People have the need to completely dodge any sort of responsibility, taking situations and problems on there own back may lead them to look or feel a certain way, which may not always turn out to be a good thing and they are afraid of this damaging their self image or relations with others.
Its an insecurity within people.......?
