When you say: "Save the Earth" what you really mean is to preserve the human friendly environment as it is.
Given the rate of human impacts on the various elements of the environment; terrestrial life may perish much sooner then it would have, if humans had not interfered with things.
Recycling will slow things down a bit but it will not stop the climate changes that will happen over the next 20-50 years.

The Earth is just fine and is doing what it does.
The life forms currently living on it are in some serious trouble, though, due to natural changes and over-pollution.
Extinction is an on-going phenomeon: once upon a time, there was no free oxygen in the air - it was considered by the organisims of the time to be a poison. Algae in the oceans grew and produced more and more oxygen, which then killed off the organisms that were populating the planet's surface. It's similar to what we are seeing now.
In many ways, this is a cycle that the Earth has gone through, some life forms rise to the top of the cycle, then die off, making way for new life forms.
The problem is for us, we kind of like it the way it has been and like living here. So we are pushing for a change in habit by people to protect our environmental needs.
If everyone did recycle and started living 'greener' it would make a difference. Slowly, but it would.
The three days after 9/11 when no airplanes flew and traffic in general was greatly reduced were three of the cleanest air days in Los Angeles history over the last 2 decades.
Some changes would be rapid - the number of days that there were unhealthful air warnings would drop noticeably and fewer people would have asthma attacks within the first year.
Changing the directions of the Gulf Stream and other weather patterns will take a long time, so we are stuck with these floods, hurricanes and droughts that are really hurting a lot of people.
So not too late, but we will suffer for what we've done and what emerging countries will do before they learn what we are learning now.

It doesn't matter China is growing so fast industrially. They are bringing a new power plant on line every week. Most coal-fired.

I don't know I've heard 2 different answers,That we can stop it,and it won't be too late. And that it will continue,on,and,on,but,we can make it so it won't be as bad as if we didn't do anything. So,I say, yes, we can make a difference and live green.

I think it would help things out a lot. It definitely couldn't hurt. We need to stop overpopulating the planet too though...
