i know someone who used to work as a bailiff and she said that they do anything they can to find the person in question, even pose as the police. If this is true isnt that something like organised crime?

cyanne i hate to tell you but bailiffs DO work outside the courthouse, and for all of you who think of bailiffs and associate them with courthouses think of the ones that work for private firms. I also think its worth mentioning i live in the Uk.

Bailiffs will tell you that they follow their code of conduct to the letter (yes they do have one) and that they are fair, polite, honest etc. They arent. I have known them threaten old ladies with the police to get money that wasnt owed by the old ladies. They quite often tell people they will call the police, but dont tell them the police's role in bailiff action. They say they will send you to prison but its not them that makes that decision. Of course some bailiffs are ok. But the bad apples are definitely in the barrell.

In general terms bailiffs perform and important function. If someone owes you money for which you have supplied goods or services you need to get that money or you could go out of business and why should you for someone who buys something when they cant pay. Having said that there are good bailiffs and bad ones. There also private bailiffs and some employed by the court. The court ones are usually good and keep to the rules it is usually the private ones who tend to break the rules because they only get paid when they recover the money. Only a magistrate court bailiff has right of entry you can refuse entry to the others but once they are in and decided what goods they are going to take they then have a right of entry to take those goods however they must not look through a window then list goods they see. they must actually enter and indicate the actual items.
p.s. we do not have bondsmen in the uk Castpaw and expect your rules are different to ours anyway

Most bailiffs in the Uk are people with limited intelligence...with no morals and not a care in the world. They are the credentials needed to hound people who are suffering debt. Its a nasty job with a dog eat dog attitude.I can,t think of a worse job than that. These days you will get hassled for an unpaid council tax bill even though you are adament you don,t owe that much. The gas/electric/telephone companies are all at it.....bullying their way in getting money out of you even though you have a dispute. On top of that....they will make you spend a fortune on the phone too !!! In the meantime they will contact recovery firms ...who will make your life hell with threatening letters. This country is getting more nastier by the day.

In UK it is a criminal offense to pose as a police officer, and bailiffs are not out simply to get you as some sort of personal vendetta. They have usually been hired by a company to whom you owe money and the company has turned to collection tactics as a last resort. Therefore if you are the victim of a mistake (you really do not owe the company money), it is the company at fault rather than the bailiffs just as the police officer serving a warrant for an offense of which you are innocent is not at fault. He/they are acting under instructions and do not actually have the authority to deviate from the instructions given to them

That sounds horrible. I have had dealings with bailiffs and most are't very nice people. Posing as the police is illegal and they could be arrested for impersonating a police officer. Bastards.

They prey on those who have fallen on hard times, like vultures. They should be obsolete in 21st Century Britain.

no, they are taking back what they are owed. That is not a crime. Borrowing money and not paying it back is no better than stealing and these people deserve to have the baliffs take their belongings.

No, they're just court officers with a lousy job to do.

I think the nature of their work kinda ends up taking its toll on them. Their outlook on people is sort of skewed. They no longer see a person...just a job.

You are obviously mistaken. Bailiffs do not do any work outside of the courthouse itself. They don't "find" anyone. They merely escort the jury in and out of the courtroom, retrieve evidence, and occasionally restrain an individual. Bailiffs are mostly a formality.

I think you've confused bailiffs and bail bondsmen. HUGE difference.
