Here is a story from my days as a salesman. I used to also work customer service, but I think this story best illustrates how to treat ALL customers.

I was tasked with making sales calls to develop new business int he mid-west. I went into one of the small retail stores (basically a hardward store) and asked to speak with the manager (I had made an appointment with him one week earlier and had also called the day before to confirm our meeting). I was told by one of the employees that "Brian, the store manager was tied-up right now. Please wait."

Ok, no problem. I saw an older man sitting behind the counter doing pretty much nothing. It's not unusual for these small businesses to have regular customers or local retired people with nothing better to do, to hang-out at the business and make small talk. We started a conversation and I introduced myself, my company and our products. To better rehearse the sales pitch that I was going to be making to the store manager in 30 minutes, I decided to give the same presentation to this old timer. After all, I had nothing better to do, and it would be good practice. So, I showed him our product and demonstrated the features and benefits. At the end of the practice presentation, the man formally introduced himself as the OWNER of the business. Brian, the store manager, was merely an employee. The owner was impressed enough with my presentation to sign-up to be a local distributor of our products.

To make my point even better. This scenario did not happen to me just once, but twice! Once in Illinois and again in Virginia. Both times, the guys looked like average street folks that were just sitting around because they had nothing better to do with their time. Boy was I fooled. And boy, was I glad I decided to PRACTICE on both of these men!

The moral of the story? You never know who you are talking to, so always be respectful of everyone you meet and treat them with kindness.

If you work in a store. Help them look around. Ask if they need anything If they are leaving ask did they find everything ok in the store. Then ask how was your service and tell them thanks and come again.
