I think generations are defined/separated by each decade. More loosely, the 40's, 80's, 90's etc. The names probably come from the media based on some major trait or event and if they make sense, if they're relative, they stick. Having said this, Baby Boomers are more strictly defined as having been born between 1947 and 1952. I've wondered at what age do you have to be during the decade you identify with - specifically, were you born during the decade - were you a teenager during that decade - or were you a young adult. I can't see assigning the 'Me Generation' to someone who was an infant/child during the 80's - but as a young adult, it makes sense. Good question - when you get a concrete answer, let me know.

Generation of itself means the time between one generation and when they have children of their own which is the next generation. The average is around 30 yrs. but you know for yourself how many people are "average". As far as the name, the Baby Boomers were named for the mass of babies born after world war II (1945). There was a lot of unemployment around that time because so many soldiers were returning from war and had no jobs. Soldiers returning from war had little else to do but make babies. Thus we have the boom of babies called Baby Boomers.

I think the news media or the gov picked the nick names. I'm not sure what the year breaks are. Baby boomers started in 1945.

A generation is usually a span of thirty years but some authorities reduce that to 25 years or less coinciding with the period of its maximum cultural influence. This cultural influence lasts from the teenage to young adult years - approx. 15-20 years. The media usually chooses the description of the cultural impact.

A generation is defined by birth. no matter if a 15 year old is the parent of a child, that child is representative of the next generation. However, for me generational definition results because of curiosity.
