I am willing to upgrade my tank, or move them to a pond. they are common goldfish. When would I need to upgrade?

I just won them at a fair, and just wanted them to have a better life than they would have otherwise.

Hi Purple, Good for you wanting to give the Commons a better life, I think you already are doing so but as several people have pointed out (& you also recognise) It is going to be an uphill struggle even maintaining a rigid maintenance routine with such a small tank. These 3 little fish are probably going to be around for many years & grow huge so I suggest you upgrade now. I would try to get the biggest tank you can reasonably afford/fit in your home rather than constantly upsizing every couple of years to keep pace with their growth. Some of my adopted fish started out as fairground prizes so it's very rewarding to see them swimming free in a huge tank.

They are ok for now, but a goldfish needs 2 gallons of water per inch of fish. They are not the bowl pets people think they are. They also will not stop growing to suit their enviroment, they will simply die when they become to large for the tank to handle. The smaller tank will also cause them stress, leading to disease and possibly death as well. I suggest you keep them in the 10 gallon for the least amount of time possible. Try looking at Craigslist and other sites for a larger tank; they always have cheap and sometimes free fish tanks. You could also save up and buy a larger one. Believe me, it is worth it. I once kept goldfish in a 150 gal tank, and it was a great experience. They develop great personalities, and become so sweet and tamed. I could pet and hand feed mine. (Pet being they would rub against my hand and climb into it when I put it in the tank. I know it isn't good for them, but I was quite young at the time) So, please, try getting a bigger tank. Goldfish make wonderful pets when kept correctly, and a 10 gal tank will waste them. Also, ALL goldfish get at the very least 8 in long, most quite a bit larger, around a foot. If you won them at a fair, they are comets, and will do best in a pond, but may be kept in a large tank until bigger.

the two tanks are way overcrowded. definite, you will desire to count variety the pleco as a fish on your tank, he's the main messy one you have via a techniques, different than the goldfish. easy plecos get VERY great, a million-2 feet interior the spectacular aquaria, and you will desire to in all possibility do away with him, till you're making plans to enhance to a seventy 5 gallon or so . The goldfish besides desires to locate a sparkling abode, he gets very great and goldfish are extensive waste manufacturers. i could do away with those 2 fish, positioned the tetras interior the 5 gallon, and you're able to desire to then upload 3 extra tetras to that. With the ten, i could shop purely the fish you have, or maybe then, with the two gouramis, and 3 barbs you will in all possibility nonetheless be somewhat overstocked, yet once you overfilter and do known water differences, the fish would desire to be superb. i recognize that pleco looks small now, yet im telling you, he would be very very great, and that they advance extraordinarily on the instant. I had a 2.5 inch pleco that hit 11 inches in quite decrease than a twelve months. i'm a huge pleco fan, and in case you are able to improve to that seventy 5 i discussed, i think of you're able to truly like him!

If you are really good at maintenance (you need to vacuum the gravel with each water change too) then they won't die from toxic poisoning, but you still should consider that a typical fancy goldfish can grow over 8" long, and common ones over a foot long. What some people consider 'growing to their environment' is in reality stunting, and it shortens their lives as well as their growth. As long as you are ok with this, then technically you can. (who cares how big they are now, all fish grow, responsible keepers think about the adult size of fish when making a decision)

Filtration is not a big concern (in this case), the bigger problem is that Goldfish get about a foot long. 3 foot long fish isn't going to work in a 10 gallon tank. Get rid of all of them and switch to a tropical tank (all you are missing to go tropical is a heater). There are a lot of small schooling fish like Tetras, Danios, Barbs, and Rasboras, and Cories, some good peacful fish like Guppies, Platies, and Swordtails, and some nice center piece fish like Dwarf Gouramis and Kuhli Loaches. Make sure you research any fish you are interested in before buying. If you have any questions, email me at nosoop4u@cox.net. Good luck!

Probably ok for the moment but some goldfish can get pretty big...so they may be small now but you may have to upgrade to a bigger tank later.

Yes -----but they will grow larger than if in a smaller tank as the size of fish can be determined on the volume of water

Sure, even a couple more wouldn't hurt as long as they aren't large. It sounds like you are taking good care of them.
