Why, When, Where (etc.) did this tradition start? I know they give them out for customer service, to get people to come back, to shut kids up..... but HOW did that start???

Its called "swag".
There was an article in Wired magazine about it. I would have copied and pasted it here, but I hate when people leave those long-winded paragraphs.

i have absolutely no idea, I'm guessing that you are either english or American but where is from (Ireland) we don't do that!!
