Parts that are deemed unimportant are taken out, in order to shorten the story. The main ideas and events remain, but extra information and extra events are removed. This is often done for audio books, because cassette tapes couldn't hold as much information as a CD.

What Does Abridged Version Mean

when a book is shortened. many times this is done so it is easier for kids to read. sometimes it is just a little abridged, where some parts that are not really necessary like descriptions are shortened or cut out. other abridged books are really more of a long summary. i think abridged books may change the language, for example from Shakespearean english to modern day english. i would recommend reading the actual version b/c once you get it, its a lot better.

When a book is 'abridged', it has literally been condensed into a required level. Maybe it might be for general readers or high intermediate, intermediate, beginner levels of readers; it's sole goal is to present the abridged version in a readable, enjoyable and understandable text with similar style, theme and plot regarding the original, unabridged book.
