Don't want an engine any greater than 1.2/1.4 max, plus something that's quite low for someone not too fit, to get in and out of easily. Want 5 doors and a new car with nice comfortable interior if possible - but I'd really like a bit at the back for the dog too but cars like that took too big for me to drive. Any ideas?

I drive a smart forfour 1.3, which is a very good car. It has 95bhp and is easier enough to use daily. If you're after a nearly new car that is part Mercedes and part Mitsubishi then I recommend this.

Or for a new car then the sister of the forfour, the Mitsubishi Colt. Again this is a 1.3l, 95bhp, you get around 45mpg. I would highly recommend this as it is a proven reliable manufacturer.

Oh yeah tax is Band C petrol (£115 per annum) and insurance group 5. Go for a new Colt.

You may laugh at this but have you ever considered a Skoda ,
the reputation these cars attained is totally uncalled for .
Even when they where being called skips , people neglected to mention that the Estelle 1600 was RAC champion for 5 years in its class , in many case's beating cars like ford , Lancia and many others in the same class . I own two cars a Volvo estate , and a Skoda Felicia estate , they are both good work horses plenty of room and reliable to a fault . yet the Volvo was considerably more exspensive . but they are both excellent cars .

We have a Kia Rio (old style) that's been pretty reliable. It's a 5 door/hatchback with decent room in the boot, not too high, not too low. It has a 1.3 engine, is relatively cheap to insure. It's also not too big. In the words of Douglas Adams, its "mostly harmless".

Price-wise, it's probably low to mid range and has a great warranty.

Just has to be the Toyota Yaris. The new model is outsanding and drives so well in particular in town so easy on the steering and the gearchange is beautiful.Their has been many improvements on this model and well worth it.I would describe it as a small BMW.A main Toyata dealer may lend you one for a 2 day trial, and after you have bought you will thank me forever more.
