Playing a musical instrument such as the Violin or Guitar improves wiring and brain function in the brain. It will not, however, makes you much more intelligent, but it will give you an edge over people who don't ever learn to play the basics of either instrument. I certainly noticed some improvement in the Cerebellum region of the brain, known for being the processing ''intel pentium chip'' part of the brain which is responsible for speed of through and co-ordination.

You probably feel calmer after playing because you've focused on a single task. You haven't spent that time worrying about other aspects of your life, and unless music is a part of your career or you're practicing for a big audition/recital, you're just doing it for your own personal enjoyment, which should be relaxing by definition.
That being said, there is some evidence that a musical education helps "exercise the muscles of the mind," if you will. The theoretical and practical aspects of music are extremely mathematical in nature, and there are studies that show that children who learn to play a musical instrument tend to do better in math during their school years. In general, the more varied the activities you choose to engage in, the more versatile your mind will be, because you actively use different areas of your brain. The more you use them, the better you'll be at a variety of things because they're accustomed to being used. There are people who find they perform better at work if they do the morning Sudoku and crossword puzzles in the newspaper before going to work, because it gets the brain working on something before they need to use it for something productive.

Playing an instrument just means you use the more creative side of your brain; i think people who play instruments are a little less wound up then others so i think it has it's advantages; as for being intelligent it doesn't really matter; if you can play an instrument then in your own way you are clever with out it being the public perception of intelligent.

Generally, playing a musical instrument does utilize the left side of your brain. Also, when we are younger, generally children use music to help learn new things. (i.e ABS's, colors, and the location of bones in your body)
Music stimulates your mind even if you do not play it, which is why people tell you to listen to classical music while you work. Due to the lack of vocals, usually, it is easier for your mind to have background music (like elevator music) to calm you but also give you something to listen to without being distracted.
This site talks about the correlation between music and intelligence.

There was a study that said playing a musical instrument or learning a new language can stave off the effects of Alzheimers.

To master playing a musical instrument requires a certain kind of intelligence.
So I would say it does not make you more intelligent than you already are.

I don't think it makes you more intelligent but it certainly adds more strings to your bow! boom boom! On a serious note - I do feel calmer, well relaxed when playing the piano.

I've heard learning to play one as a child makes you smarter in Math and Science and stuff. Makes the left side of your brain smarter.

It supposedly does. Don't forget, in order to play music, you have to learn a whole new language (reading / interpretting music). It also relaxes you and stimulates your mind.
I feel much better about myself when I play my piano or violin. It focuses my mind.
