I suspect that providing for the family is the main traditional role. However, I tend to think of Dads as being fun... playing and romping with the kids is a very typical "dad" thing to do, but is so very important in the healthy development of children.

Actually, the notion that fathers should be affectionate is really old. Rousseau wrote that the "sweet sentiment of paternal love" was half of the basis of all human societies.

In the 1850's, the "Christian Fatherhood" movement urged men to avoid the "authoritarian and distant fatherhood of the past - a grave error not to be repeated" and encouraged "affectionate manners and pleasing tones, and an ever-beaming countenance" when spending time with children.

Later, in the 1950s, men spent more time with their children than either the previous genreation or the one after. One social scientist wrote in 1955 that:

"The direction of change is towards the greater participation of the man in all tasks of the household. Paternal authority is gone. In it's place is an equalitarian family based on companionship and care."

Another article written in 1950 said that the father of "today" "wants to work hard, but not too hard" so he can have "plenty of time with the kids".

Therefore, I would argue, the traditional father is one who is interested in expressing his love and affection to his children, spends a great deal of time with them, and balances his postion of authority with kindness.
