intersex is the more 'PC' term these days for a 'shemale' or a hermaphrodite. And they have been around much much longer than 50 or 70 years, I believe they go back as long as recorderd history. I could be mistaken but I believe they excisted in roman and greek times.
Often the 'condition' is 'fixed' at birth now so the child has only one set of genitals, which has been incredibly problematic at times.
There is loads of info out there on it. Try searching intersex on the wikipedia.

this problem has been around since the dawn of time, just was not in the public eyes so much before. there is a whole section dealing with this at your public library, try doing a little research.reading more and less youtube
