Its been a roller-coaster ride of magnificent proportions.
Racism has lessened, but blacks have fewer excuses for not succeeding. Oprah proves the point. Whites don't hate blacks. When they do what is needed to succeed they are welcomed, rewarded and promoted.
Women have more freedom, but along with that comes more work and responsibility..
We have better cars, better roads, but still get stuck in traffic.
In politics, the WWII veterans KNEW what evil was.
We have lost sight if what tyranny can do.
I saw the greatest change in the late1960s.
Students protesting and disrupting classes in universities.
Demanding "rights".
I think they have a right to get the education their parents are paying for. They have a right to sit down, shut up and LEARN.
News reporting went from "The driver lost control of the car and struck a tree." to "The car went out of control and struck a tree".
See the difference?
Now the CAR is responsible.
The driver is no longer responsible for his actions.
The same holds true throughout society.
Everyone MUST be held responsible for their actions and when we don't demand THAT we are in trouble!
Cut the excuses and get on with a responsible and productive life. The Government doesn't OWE you a living, so don't give them the authority to TAKE your living.

Me to. I remember learning to drop, roll, and cover in school just in case of nuclear war. It seems foolish now, looking back. What would getting under your little school desk do? I think that my parents (both dead now, my Dad was a WWII vet with 6 yrs. in North Africa and South Pacific) felt like the situation was in good hands with the President and Congress watching out for the best interest of our country. I was also a child of the 60's and remember Viet Nam and the turmoil brought on by that war. I think the country changed then and has never been the same. "Question Authority" was the saying back then. Citizens did not assume anymore that the President and Congress were watching out for the best interest of the country. In all I think it's a good thing, but it does appear at times that we are not all Americans any more. We are red state, blue state, liberal or conservative Americans. We would decry hyphenated Americans such as Italian-Americans, but now it seems that we are all hyphenated Americans ourselves.

According to my Dad, who was on a destroyer in the Pacific in WWII - we have become richer, but more cynical. He felt that he could trust his government. When asked when it started to change - he really doesn't know.
My opinion is that global, instant communication changed everything. We know what's happening everywhere in the world immediately - when politicians are dishonest, somebody always finds out - usually quickly. Did you have any idea that JFK was having affairs? Neither did I - maybe my parents did, but they only cared that he led the country. After all, they said, "He was a man".
And, I don't think we know what the word "decorum" means - our language has become vulgar, insults are mistaken for humor and we drug our kids because they are too active - and then wonder why they use drugs and alcohol when they become adults.
Nevertheless - I am hopeful, optimistic, and love this country that my Dad fought for - and, he will also tell you, he fought so that we could maintain our rights - including the one about free speech for everyone (not just the ones we agree with).

Are you saying we are anti-american for questioning our government? So, you believe that we should allow them to do whatever that pleases them, because we voted them in. We vote in our presidents and our senators for various reasons. None of the reasons happen to be which leader will take us into unnecessary wars and which won't. Bush in the beginning of his term, had a mostly republican congress. That is what screwed our whole system over. Bush has done a great thing for this country though. He has given us every aspect of how a president can abuse his power using the privaleges given to him. I feel now that Pardons, and commuting of sentences should be called for by the president, and decided in the senate by a 2/3rds vote. As to the law, how is it that our president is not accountable for the decision he makes, yet, we held Saddam accountable for the decisions he made. How is that real justice? The law needs to not protect the law makers anymore, as long as they do, law makers will continue to make decisions based on their own beliefs and view points that holds no consequence, rather than a logical decision that is weighed by consequences. I dont think the costs of american lives are exactly a consequence for president bush. How many funerals has bush visited of those that died... a hint is... A armless man can count them on his non existing hands. If your only consequence is whats most valuable to someone other than yourself, whats the reason to do whats right?

For the better when we intervened democracy flourished and millions were saved... We pumped money into the European economy so they would not fall to communism while some will call this imperialism the USA has allowed for a rather stable world authority when the rest will not step up to the plate... LIBERALS have changed for the worse ever since but the USA is better

You could be proud to be American in those times. Now it is a joke. Ever see the Simpsons episode where Lisa puts a Canadian flag on her bookbag when they go to Europe so nobody knows she is American? That is not too far off the mark.

We began the war on poverty in the mid 60's and have spent 6 trillion so far and it has only gotten worse. So I will go with the start of the modern day slave organization called social services.

hard to say with Bush....
but it could be when he lied about IRAQ, and now Al Queda is stronger because of it.
It could even be in fixing the election that he did to become president.
But when you have a president who needs to hide, needs to deceive, needs to be republican first, american second, thats when it shows you just how vulnerableour system of governement is.
Afterall, its not just bush thats messed up our country for 6 years.
Its all the republicans who have enabled him to do so much dmaage.
And have also, and still are preventing democrats to do whats best for AMERICA.
It only proves republicans are republican first, american second
