Dream Theater ( Berklee College of Music), Yes, Genesis, King Crimson (Robert Fripp mainly), Frank Zappa ( obviously to compose music, you must have music education.) - so many more.
To play progressive music, you must acknowledge musical theory, otherwise it's almost impossible to play in such a complicated sense.

well there is only 1 band that i've paid enough attention to to know if they did or not, and that's hinder. mark king (guitar) went to college and got a degree in music then he went to recording school. i can't find the link where he gave more details so this one will have to do.
