I am going to go a little different route than the other answers. Yes there is a unacceptable level of complacency......with all age groups, where I will differ from the other answers is that I believe this is due to the horrible "government school system" that is called public schools. The politicians of our era do not want an educated and informed voter, we are a threat to their power. As such, they have used the power of the teachers unions to dumb down our kids. I have two daughters in high school. The oldest will be taking her first civics class as a senior. What history they have been taught in government schools in relation to our form of government has been wrong on many fronts. I have spent countless hours teaching them the history of our country. In developing countries, the youth are fully aware of the effects of tyrany, and the promise of a representitive republic style of government. How many people of any age do you know that believe we live in a democracy? In summary, I believe the complacency or a lack of, is a direct result of education, whether it is in school, or in the school of hard knocks.

We live in a country of plenty American youth have never seen hard times. In other counties people are making life and death decisions daily. The young don't know their future is being sold out from under them. There's a storm coming and the youth will play a part.

Those in developing countries have more to work for, and more work to do. They know they will have to pull themselves up by their own boot-straps.
Here everything has beed provided and little is demanded.
The youth of America don't realize they have work to do to assure their mostly functional systen requires their efforts also.

The average american kid is overindulged. He is given what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants it. When they arent given what they want they consider themselves abused. They are self absorbed and involved only in the moment. Kids in other countries arent quite as mollycoddled as our are. They look upon choosing their leaders as an important part of growing up and contributing to their community. Parents are at fault here. If you expect nothing, you will definitely get it.

You must be kidding that is all anyone talks about.
surprisingly though most are for the war. The young men especially. they were saying let them kill each other before we get old enough to fight. Bush's strategy is working let them annihilate each other. If you can get the Muslims to fight each other we won't have to fight them.

because the average teenager is playing video games, eating fast food, overweight, and too spoiled for their own good.
Whereas in developing countries their familes are usualy so poor that its there with them daily and they will do anything to try to alleviate some of their families strain.
