BAGHDAD - Iraq's shaky government will be hard-pressed to meet the 18 benchmarks even by the end of the year, and many Iraqis believe focusing on U.S.-mandated yardsticks has in effect set them up for failure.

When it gets too hard, we should lower the standards. Like in our schools. That way, everybody gets an A. Perhaps if the benchmark for Iraq was "Everything didn't blow up today," we'd be all set.

I think you misunderstand the article. Baghdad is claiming that Washington's imposed benchmarks are either unreasonable, unhelpful or impossible at this time. I think they should have a say in what these benchmarks are, or what they can reasonably do in a given time frame. The goal is to move towards securing the government, progress should be made in that field without arbitrary deadlines, but with reasonable oversight.

They can't meet the benchmarks! They can't even get a quorum in order to pass anything! And there is a no confidence vote on the table!

Our guys can fight and die for years for a government that doesn't work! Great if you are an oil company!

Forget them. If they can't meet the benchmarks then they just don't want democracy. And if they don't want democracy we are not going to sit around and die while continually trying to encourage them to embrace an idea they've rejected.
