Should be a metal tag on the mower that indicates the engine oil capacity. If you don't find it, try the John Deere website or phone them. Good luck

That depends on the make and size of the engine. In a rider I assume it is 12 or more horse power. The engine should hold about a quart and a half. If you don't know, put in about a quart and use the dipstick to check it. Add more until it is at the full mark. Take note of how much you put in so next time you will know. If by chance you overfill it, drain some out before you run it. It should never be above the full mark.

If your mower has a 9 HP Kawasaki, I would assume it would take a quart and a half. But the best way is to pour in about 1/2 a quart and check the dipstick. Then pour in a little more, and check again. Yes this is time consuming, but engine failure due to overfilling the oil is even more so.
