This is a matter of perception. What is your definition of success? To 'make it' would mean to get to a point where you would most want to be. So you are the only true one to answer your question.
If finishing your life with the most toys and be envied by all is a place you feel is to 'make it', then you need a formula to make that a reality. If to 'make it' you mean to have a family and live the American dream, then a very different formula would be required.
But in all scenarios, I believe honesty, morality, and integrity are required to come to the final season of your life, whichever direction you take, and have a peaceful soul, few regrets, and be surrounded by people who love you.
Because no matter what paths you take, a lonely heart has not 'made it'. And a life full of regret has not 'made it'. Success is not self made. It is dependent on others. So it comes to this: How will you share your life with others?

Here are a few things it takes to make it (better) in life: common sense, ability to get along with others, ability to stand on your own, hope and faith, a will to survive, do the best you can to keep your body healthy, and the ability to see the humor in life and laugh often.

Will power, respect(for yourself and others) imagination, a clear head, the ability to take risk, the ability to tell if someone is lying, passion, love, and an open mind!

will power, ignorance, greed.. and not giving a shyt what people say about you. sad, but true. only the strongest survive. otherwise, you'll be living with your folks until your 40, or you'll be a housewife married to a man of will power, ignorance and greed.
