Out of all the women who are or did nurse and drink alcohol, how much did you drink? a few drinks once a month? A drink here and there every week? A drink a day?

Also, were there any noticable side effects? Did you talk to your Dr about it?

I read in the baby books that it is fine to have a drink or two while breastfeeding. It doesn't have any long term effects as long as you don't over do it. I also attended a meeting on breast feeding and I was also told by them it was fine. They recommended if your doing both bottle and breast to switch to the bottle for a feeding if you still feel uncomfortable with the drink you may have had and pumping your milk to prevent your breasts from becoming engorged. Or if your not using the bottle, pump some ahead of time that way you will have a feeding for you baby just in case. The alcohol doesn't stay in your system that long (of you only had one or two drinks) and by the next feeding you should be fine! But you really shouldn't drink one everyday, every so often is fine.

When I was breast feeding, I had a glass of wine here or there, but not very often, maybe 2-3 times. i did talk to a few nurses and doctor about it. Nurses in the delivery room told me to have a glass of wine as soon as I get home, but that they were really not suppose to tell you that. I asked the doctor and they told me to avoid it close to when you "let down" and feed. So what I ended up doing, I would pump for any special occasions that I would want to drink, like Christmas time. Then when I drank, I would use the stash I pumped and then I would get rid of the breast milk for a good 24 hours from when i stopped drinking. This seemed to be the best way to ensure my son didn't get any alcohol in the breast milk.

REPORT HER, Please, please, get this woman help... they may not take her baby away if they see her fit as a mother, They will get her into rehab! she should not be consuming alcohol while breastfeeding... What happens when she has a bad night, and drinks a few to many, what happens to baby when hes crying, hungry and wet through?? Mommy cant see to him, shes drunk!!! Look i know you don't want to have to do this, But the Lady's obviously concerned about the welfare of her child, or she would not be asking you multiple times if the baby's *normal*... But she is incapable of stopping Because she has an addiction... Addicted individuals are selfish, and this baby could become very sick, or even die, if the mother does not stop... Think of the child's future, if her mother is an alcoholic now, chances are she always will be, if she does not get help NOW... That baby has no future with a drunk mother... You need to report this ASAP!!! GOOD LUCK...

They say that while you are nursing, it's not a good idea to drink. I go out sometimes, but i will pump and dump... so the baby doesnt get the breast milk after i've had a few drinks. Alcohol is in breast milk after you've drank.
So, once the alcohol has left your system, it's safe to nurse again.
Alcohol is bad for babies, because their livers arnt working like ours do.. and a little alcohol to them can do serious damage.

I rarely drank during nursing but I can tell you the guidelines I've read. Alcohol will pass into the infants bloodstream in roughly the same proportion as yours and since they are much smaller the amount that gets you buzzed may be very harmful to the baby. If you want to drink you should allow enough time for your body to metabolize the alcohol before you need to breast feed again. I think it'd best to wait until they sleep through the night before really allowing yourseld to drink. If you wait until they go to sleep at night or plan to give them bottles until morning then by morning you should be cleaned up enough to breastfeed. Obviously you can't party until dawn but who has the energy antway?

I had a few drinks while nursing, not while my son was an infant, and I never nursed right after drinking, I'd wait a few hrs, and give a bottle if he wanted to eat.
