Dave Stapleton was the late-inning defensive replacement for most of the season.

It was Dave Stapleton, and he was usually brought in as a defensive replacement (especially when the game was on the line). Buckner was suffering injuries to his ankles, and was often replaced in later innings.

BTW - it was not an easy play, and the Mets had already tied the game on a wild pitch. Buckner had 102 rbi's that year, and they probably would not have made it to the Show without him.
