Only checking accounts offer debit cards (no Money market or savings). Debit cards are operate a VISA/MC network but are NOT credit cards.
Look for a basic free checking account that does not require you to keep a minimum balance. use the on line baking to help pay bills and manage you account. Contact your local bank to find out who offers what.

A checking account is a very good idea. Especially if you want a debit card. Try to find a bank that has a very small minimum limit balance. Some are $500 and some are more like $2000. Depending on how much you will be depositing, that is really important.

You need to open a checking account that will not allow you to have overdraft limits due to this being your first card. Example: If you have 500 dollars in the bank all you can take out or use your ATM card for is 500 dollars.

Generally a savings account will pay more interest, but checking accounts are nice. It really doesn't matter which type you open though. Generally a Credit Union will be better.

open a checking account, but also open a savings account and put something in there every time you make any money, even if its only $5.
