This is an idea that came to me and I think it's my duty to share it to the world.:) Now, really, I know it's strange, but, I think governments could develop this system. Help save human lives:)! try to pass this idea by messenger or whatever. It might just become reality! Sounds strange but..it would save lives :) ;)

maybe if access to live satellite imaging becomes feasible, but obviously google earth is a bunch of 3+ year old stitched together photographs. the google team would be capable of picking out that kind of informaton though more than anyone.

but overall i'd think turning the new predator spy plane around to just find people rather than find them and bomb them would be a more realistic option and a worthy use of aerial technology.

sadly war pays, lost people don't.

If Google Earth was operating on the scale you expect then the idea would have to be monitored on a regular basis and by every known body - unfortunetly not everyone goes by the google earth standards and prefer other methods a lot less far out. Policing the public in the future sounds like taggin will occur at birth and implants on everyone curbing their rights of movement to anywhere stranger than their own backyard.
Such imprisonment is not yet law - but they are getting there. Society makes it so - everyone keeps an eye on everyone else and competition and onupmanshiop deals are the guts of life..or so it is said.
If such an idea would come into being then other happenings would be apparent too...the wars could be better equipt. There are lotsa other niggly things like that going on all around the globe.

Not a bad idea at first thought but delving deeper there are problems,as one poster says google earth is not up to date and real time satellite monitoring would cost heaps, then there are the privacy issues the best system is something which already exists-EPIRB devices can pinpoint a location within seconds and they are reasonably cheap (around $300.) but congrats on at least thinking of how you can help others.

google earth would indeed be able to pick up an SOS on the ground, but so far the only pics I've seen on google earth are 4 to 6 years old. My local shopping center is 5 years old, and in google earth is is just a cleared patch of dirt.
