Many things can make a toilet's water run, some are quick fixes and some will take some parts.

The first step in troubleshooting ANYTHING is visual inspection.

FIRST: take the top off and LOOK.
Is the stopper (sometimes called a flapper) at the bottom seated and the water is just flowing down the drain OR is it seated and the water is flowing on the floor?

If it's flowing on the floor, turn off the water by turning the faucet under the toilet. This means the valve it not seating and you either need to relpace the gaskets or buy a new mechanism... depending on what kind you have. Some floats are on a long bar and some are on a vertical rod. If pulling the float up stops the water, you've got worn out gaskets.

If the flapper is not seating, it may have been knocked crooked and you can straighten it or it may be worn and a new one has to be bought.

The chain or other mechanism may be tangled and if it is, untangle it and see if there's something you can do to prevent it from winding on itself.

If this is too much for you or one of your mechanical minded friends, call a plumber. I think they're about $90/hr

It is probably a chink in the chain between the stopper (thing that plugs up the water in the resivior) and the handle.

I agree with the jiggle the handle lady, but if you want to really fix it.

Check the stopper, some get old cracked and let water through. Might need to replace that.

Don't waste your money on a plumber for this, that would be a shame.

E-mail me if you are unclear.

Corner it in the narrow hall way and chase it back into the bathroom with a broom.
Seriously:
1. Jiggle the handle.
2. Take the lid off and see if a chain is broken or a flapper valve is stuck open.
3. shut off the water.
4. call some one.

First, take the lid off and make sure that the flapper valve has a good seal. Then, make sure the water gets high enough to make the float arm turn off. The float arm can be bent down a little so when the water raises it floats high enough to shut off. If this doesnt resolve your problem call a plumber. If you don't know what i'm talking about check out this diagram.

Seriously there is a flap at the bottom of the tank behind where you sit. It needs replaced and is very easy to do. Go to your local hardware store and ask them for parts and directions and they'll be happy to help. Make or model makes no difference as they have universal replacement parts.

jiggle the handle, turn off the water, its usually on the bottom of the toilet some where on the base of it, just turn the knob

there should be an oval valve below the tank. turn it clockwise all the way and depress the flush. if nothing happens, the water is off.

take a bigger dump next time so it has a slower getaway!

I don't know but you better fix it fast.. Wait until you get your water bill. It's gonna be ridiculous, if you're just now going about getting it fixed. We let ours run about 3 days and when we tried to dispute with them they said we had to pay because we didn't call sooner. Hurry!!

If you are serious, there is a rubber flap in the bottom of the tank that is probably worn. you can get them at Wmart and they are easy to change out. Directions on the package. Believe me, if I can do it, you can do it.
