The batter becomes a runner when, among other criteria, he hits a ball that passes over a fence at a distance of 250 feet or greater from home plate, in fair territory (6.09d). As for the runner, or batter-runner, he must not "abandon his effort to touch the next base," and must run the bases in the correct order. The player who has hit the home run must run around the bases if his run is to count. If he fails to do so, he is out. This is not an appeal play. If he becomes injured prior to reaching first base, he may be declared out, at the umpire's discretion. This is also not an appeal play. If the batter-runner reaches first base on his own, he may then leave the game in favor of a pinch runner, who will complete the journey to 2B-3B-Home. (7.08a COMMENT.) The batter-runner is credited with the HR and RBI, but the PR is credited with the R. If the PR cannot complete the rounding of the bases, he may leave the game in favor of another PR, but only after he has advanced to the next base. If at any time, one offensive player passes another, the formerly-trailing runner is declared out automatically. This is not an appeal play.

If at any time while he is the active player running the bases, the batter-runner is physically assisted by any player or coach on his team, or by any other person acting on behalf of any player or coach, the batter-runner is declared out.

The bases MUST be run, and run correctly, in order to record the batter's run (to which he is entitled, if the ball left the park) and those of any baserunners.

However, if the batter or a runner is injured, the team may insert a pinch-runner to complete the circuit of the bases. The PR is credited the run scored.

This happened to Gabe Kapler in 2005 with the Red Sox. He was on first base when Graffanino homered; Kapler tore his knee rounding second base and collapsed. After he was tended to and taken off, and Graffanino waited patiently between first and second (still cannot pass a leading baserunner, or be called out), Machado entered as pinch-runner for Kapler, completed the trot, and scored the run.

Not sure if you can put in a pinch runner on a round tripper, but you do have to touch home plate to make it official, that why the umpire stays at the plate to make sure you touch it as all your teammates are whacking you on the head. If a pinch runner is not allowed, I assume your teammates would pick you up and carry you around the bases.

You can have a pinch runner take your place and finish the round trip. You will not be able to re-enter the game though, but in this case no need to since the game is over.

that happened once in a big league game. the guy hit a walkoff in a major playoff game and when he was rounding the bases the crowd stormed the field and stole home plate and 3rd base because they were so happy. the umpire recognized that it wasnt possible to touch the bases and awarded him the home run. another time. i cant remember the player but he was really sick but they pulled him off teh bench to pinch hit and he hit a walkoff. he couldtn make it around the bases so the team carried him

Rules say the run doesnt count, and the umpire can put a new ball in play so the players can get the guy out at home.

So if he doesnt touch home plate, the run does not count.

Oh, and hes out if he doesnt touch the plate.

I'm pretty sure that would never happen and if it did they would probably still give him a home run.
