The XP reinstallation deleted your soundcard driver. After a fresh OS install, you should immediately install the motherboard chipset drivers and the drivers of all onboard devices (VGA, sound, LAN, etc. It usually comes with the CD containing the chipset drivers or you could download it from the site of the motherboard maker.
You may have installed the wrong driver.

Right click on MyComputer from the desktop icon or the start menu. Chose Properties then Hardware (tab), click the Device Manager button. Scroll down the list to the topic of Sound / Video and Game Controllers
and expand it open so you can see what is listed.

What you could do, is if you feel the audio drivers are installed on your system. Locate your Audio driver
Legacy Audio Driver.
AC 97' Audio Controller
SB Live Series!

Find your Audio Driver file, right click on it and Uninstall / Remove it.

Do not remove any of the video or audio Codecs.

Restart the computer and Windows should come back up and say it's found new hardware and will install the software.
