I leave it on all the time. I always turn off the screen when i'm not using it. Is leaving it on all the time really bad for it? It takes a while once it starts up to get to normal speed, so I hate to turn it off. Any opinions?

This is a hotly debated issue within the Pro IT community.

Some say it's bad on the hard drive to constantly turn the computer off and on. A few say it makes no difference.

I personally shut mine off all the way every day and have for over ten years with no adverse effects.

You say it takes a while to bootup. How old is the computer? How many Startup Programs do you have in your system tray (should NOT be more than SIX [6])? When was the last time you ran ScanDisk and Defragged? How long has it been since you UPDATED and RAN your Anti-malware progs? WHAT Anti-malware progs are you using? ALL of this can have respective effects on how fast the system boots up and runs once booted.

Shutting down or leaving a box on debate is an old myth that seemed to started it's practice back in the mid-1990s. The real answer is "c". There has been no justifiable evidence to say that a CPU or PC lasts longer or shorter if you shutdown and power it up or leave it on all the time. It really is for power consumption preference.

Here's what PC World posted in response to the myth (with the frame of mind that the myth is that your PC should be shut down everyday in order to stay healthy - great article):

"Your PC doesn't need to be shut down fully every day to stay healthy. Many people hate to wait for Windows to shut all the way down. And they really hate to wait for it to boot all the way up again. The more programs and utilities you have running, the worse that boot time becomes. One answer: Use Windows XP's Hibernate option (look for it in your Control Panel under Power Options). This will make your PC go to sleep instead of shutting all the way down."

Although it is a consideration for better practice in my opinion that a system that is regularly rebooted refreshes it's memory and system caches. In my opinion, regular reboots are healthy to a system regardless of the 30 seconds to a minute you have to wait.

Hope this helps...

No. The most reliable computers we have are the ones that never get turned off. The computer does more work while starting up one time than it would sitting idle all day. The screen uses most of the electricity. The rest of the computer uses very little when it's not doing anything.

You will burn out your power supply. Besides that it isn't good for the environment to waste electricity.
