My son was born via emergency c-section at 36 weeks 6 days, because he was in distress. He went to the NICU for 1 wk. He is developmentally delayed ( 1 yr. behind on everything) and is now 2 1/2.
My daugter was born via c-section (because of the previous c-section) at 36 weeks 5 days because I went into labor naturally. She is now 6 1/2 months and is completely fine.
My sister-in-law delivered her daughter at 35 wks. 3 days via c-section because the baby was not thriving. She went to the NICU for 1 1/2 months, but is now 1 1/2 yrs. old and is completely fine.
It really depends on the individual and their situation.

I delivered on the day I got to 37 weeks, (though I tried to go into labor at 26 and 36 weeks) she was 5 lbs 1 oz, healthy lungs, but she was jaundiced and was a lazy eater. The hospital didn't catch that last part in time and she had to be treated for dehydration. I didn't know some babies can't be put on on-demand feeding. Apparantly very small, jaundiced babies are at high risk for being lazy eaters. Also, being early seems to make the risk of being jaundiced higher. She's now a healthy 6 month old with her weight being average =)

Usually if they know u are in labor and are going to have the baby they will give you a shot of steriods to help the baby with the lungs developing faster. I went into labor last week at 33 wks but they stopped it with a shot and IV thats usually the case. Some hospitals won't stop it after 34-36 weeks though. I am a member of babyfit.com and in a group of people that are all due in august like me and some have already had there babies and posted about it and they are fine!! Some spent a couple of days in the NICU but other than that they are all fine (total of 4 now).

I work with premature babies. The babies stay in the NICU until they reach at least 36 weeks gestation. Most 35 weeks and under need NG tubes because they either can't coordinate suck swallow and breathing, or they are burning too many calories when feeding. They have respitory problems and the winter months can be really rough, as they get complications from RSV ,which 99% of babies get, but most parents thinks it's just a cold, but in premies is causes pnemonia. Alot with have asthma too. In the long run, babies over 28 weeks gestation do fine and usually have no permanent delays.

I delievered at 36 weeks because of an infection I got from my water leaking. My son was fine he was on oxygen for about 18 hours after he was born. I had also had 2 sets of steroid shots at 33 weeks because they didn't know how much longer I would go just to ensure that his lungs would be developed. He is as healthy as any other kid.

I delivered at 36 weeks because of preeclampsia. The baby was a bit on the small side, but had no problems other than a tiny bit of jaundice.

i delivered my 2nd at 34 weeks he was big at 5 lbs 4 ounces for a preemie but he did have breathing difficulties and then when they fixed that he couldn't regulate his body temp he spent 8 days in the hospital scary...but he is now 8 and a little on the small side but we think he will take after his father and probably have a growth spurt when he is 12...the hardest part was coming home without him and the unknown.
