That's too bad. I was really hoping the Devils would get him. I bet Lou was being cheap like always and wouldn't make a big enough offer.

EDIT: I JUST FOUND OUT how much Souray is getting, and it's ridiculous. 5 year deal...$6.5, $6.5, $5.5, $4.5, $4.5. $5.4 cap hit. $6.5M for the first two years? Edmonton can have him for that bloated salary.

I don't think you can look at it like that. Play-off teams are someone hard to predict. Remember that Edmonton AND Carolina didn't make the play-offs last year after being in the finals. NJ could/will be on a downward trend if Brodeur decides to quit after this year (which I have heard rumblings about). SJ is hard to argue.
That said, when I first read your question, I thought you meant that the Oilers were stupid to get Souray. That, I would agree with. Edmonton is moving in the wrong direction. Souray is pretty brutal but teams are fooled by his 25 or whatever goals-mostly all on the PP. He has a heavy shot and THAT IS IT. He had his best year last year as an impending FA. He is a liability.

Stupid for moving back home and still making millions? I don't think so. At best, feel free to call him a homeboy. But after being out in the league for about 10 years, some jump at a chance to come home and play 40 games in front of old friends and family. A lot better than 1 game every 3 years. Oh well, if I recall right, Montreal was one of the teams that voted to keep the schedule sucking the way it does.

Souray thrives on media, he loves being in the spot light, I think he is going to regret his move. but..whatever makes him happy.

I have no issues with Edmonton, I like the team..but come on!

Jeff: I'm sorry, but I doubt he will get more media attention in Edmonton than he does here in Montreal lol ...but anyhow, it's not about media attention, I hope he does well there, he was a good player for us and did lots of charity/extra work for the fans etc... We're gonna miss him here....at least I will :(

Though I don't understand what went down... I understood the part about him wanting to go to SJ due to family, but Edmonton? I wonder what truly went down for him to leave Montreal

Then again, he IS from Alberta

No, he's not stupid. He knows that if he does well in Edmonton he'll get a nice pay raise and a lot more media attention.

Oh, he'll get more media attention as the only really all star quality player the Oilers have right now. The Habs will do fine, they're a lot deeper then the oils were. And the oilers lost all of their good players. He'll be the only one the media has to focus on...

Souray was a mess.....no matter how much he scores can we really have a defender who can't defend? THat is not NJ hockey. I think we can do better than him and its a good thing we didnt get him. He thinks he's worth a lot more than he is, and he will probably rot in edmonton. I dont disliek the oilers so i hope they didnt make a mistake, but he was not a fit for NJ. Now we have cap space for lou to work his magic liek always

He essentially signed for the equivalent of what Montreal forked out to get Hamrlik, Souray's replacement. Very bizarre.

For all intents and purposes, the Oilers have replaced M.A. Bergeron's shot from the point and Montreal got a little better in it's own zone.

How do you know Edmonton didn't beat those offers? The only story so far has no financial details.

Besides, if I'm Souray, do I really want to line up across from Craig 'Brain Cloud' Rivet?

Not exactly, he wanted to be close to home and you can't fault him for that.

But for a chance to be with a winning team and be a major contributor he should have signed with San Jose.
