It’s likely that the pressure tank has become waterlogged. The tank serves as a pressurized reservoir and reduces the need for the pump to constantly operate. It does this by providing a volume of air separated from the water in the tank by a rubber bladder. When the pump fills the bladder with water, the air in the tank is compressed. That pressure then drives the water through your house’s plumbing. But when the bladder fails, water leaks into the air chamber on the other side, eventually displacing the air entirely.
Without a volume of air that can be compressed, two problems arise. First, the tank’s pressure drops rapidly when water is used somewhere in the house. This activates the well pump. Second, since water is not compressible, the pump almost instantly reaches its high-pressure setting and shuts off.

Best guess is that the bladder in the holding tank has broken. You will probably need to buy a new tank. The bladder tells the pump when to shut off. Being broken, it can't do it's job.

Get someone in to look at it immediately. We got our electric bill one month and it was close to $500 because our pump was running all the time like that. I'm not sure what they did--it involved dropping a new something or other into the well--but you need a pro and pronto--before you add an astronomical electric bill to your troubles...

You likely need a new tank. Get a "bladder" tank. You need to have a cushion of air for pump to work properly. It also is possible to be a bad pressure switch.

there could be a leak somewhere that is emptying the tank. We have well water, and we can tell when the toilet is running because the pump comes on way more then it should

Sounds like the holding tank is bad. Need to get a professional plumber or well company in to look it over.
